Abstract

1,039,429. Rotary screw pumps. FLYSTS PUMPAR A. B. April 14, 1965 [Aug. 18, 1964; Jan. 21, 1965], No. 16102/65. Heading F1F. [Also in Division F2] In a rotary screw pump as described in Specification 1,033,872, the pump includes a drive-shaft 26, Fig. 1, passing through a rotary seal at the suction end of the pump and connected by a universal joint 30 to one end of an intermediate shaft 24 which is connected at its other end by a similar joint to the rotor 20. The seal comprises a guide ring 54 having clearance with respect to the shaft 26 and an inner end face ground perpendicular to the shaft axis which abuts a carbon ring 64 co-operable with a spring-loaded O-ring 64a which rotates with the shaft. The seal is completed by a conventional sealing sleeve 60 inserted in a recess 54b in the guide ring to shield the bearing 52. A space between the sleeve 60 and the recess communicates with atmosphere to permit leakage when the pump is inoperative. Each universal joint 30 includes a ball-joint receiving exclusively axially directed forces acting on the rotor and a cross-pin exclusively transmitting torque. The intermediate shaft 24 is ball-ended with hemispherical surfaces 28, Fig. 4 (not shown) seating on complementary seats 42 in the rotor 20 (or drive shaft head 26b). Pins 36 perpendicularly disposed with respect to each other and to the shaft axis pass with clearance through bores 34 in the ball-ends. The bores 34 are tapered partly in the planes common with the shaft axis and partly in planes perpendicular thereto to permit conical oscillatory movement of the shaft. The tapers are arranged so that torque is transmitted by line contact between the pins and the bases. Coned nuts 38 secure the pins 36 to the rotor 20 and drive shaft head 26b.
