Abstract

1,057,420. Grinding. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORPORATION (OPERATING) Ltd. Dec. 2, 1965 [Dec. 30, 1964], No. 52876/64. Heading B3D. [Also in Division F2] Means for grinding internal screw-threads comprises a thread-grinding wheel 6 which is rotatably mounted at the extremity of a quill I at an inclination to the axis of the quill determined by the helix angle of the desired thread and which is driven by a shaft 5 extending axially through the quill and connected to the grinding wheel through the medium of a universal joint. The quill 1 is cantilevered from the head (2, Fig. 1, not shown) of a grinding machine and has bearings 3, (4) for the shaft 5. The inner end of the shaft carries a drive gear (7) and thrust bearing (8), and the outer end is formed with a part-spherical surface 9 which has a centre 10 in the mid-plane of the grinding wheel 6 and is formed with a diametricallyopposed pair of slots 13. A drive cap 14 engages the surface 9 and has a pair of inwardlyprojecting splines which co-operate with the slots 13, and a pair of outwardly-projecting splines which co-operate with the slots 13, and a pair of outwardly-projecting splines 16 which engage slots 17 in an internal part-spherical surface 18 in a boss 19 carrying the grinding wheel which is clamped against a shoulder by a nut 20. The boss is provided with a bearing surface 192 which engages an inclined face 12 on a sleeve 11 mounted on the quill 1, the sleeve being rotatable through 180 degrees to accommodate right and left hand threads and being replaceable with other sleeves having faces 12 at different inclinations corresponding to other helix angles. Coolant and/or lubricant may be supplied to the quill from a fitting (24) and pass through a bore 25 to the universal joint and spill out past a seal 27 which prevents dirt entering the joint. The other end of the shaft has a seal (26). Shims (23) may be inserted between the gear (7) and thrust bearing (8) to take up end play.
