Abstract

1,048,126. Winding yarns; reducing tension. COURTAULDS Ltd. Aug. 29, 1963 [June 1, 1962], No. 21159/62. Headings DID and D1J. Tension in an elastic yarn is relaxed as the yarn is being wound on to a package. Yarn 8 is drawn by a belt having a series of transverse ridges 4 and wound on a package 6 driven by frictional contact with the belt. The yarn 8 contacts the belt as it passes round a pulley 3 and leaves the belt and is wound on the package 6 at the commencement of the upper straight run. Since the spacing of the ridges 4 is greater as the belt passes round the pulley 3 than on the straight upper run the tension is reduced or even completely relaxed as it is wound on the package. The degree of reduction in tension depends on the height of the ridges and on the radius of the pulley. A traverse guide 9 distributes the yarn over the length of the package 6. In an alternative embodiment, the belt has no ridges but is extensible and is driven at a greater speed in the initial yarn contacting region than in the region of the package.
