Abstract

1,048,008. Pipe couplings; joint-making packing. CORNING GLASS WORKS. Jan. 21, 1965 [Jan. 27, 1964], No. 2726/65. Headings F2B and F2G. A coupling comprises a flexible gasket 18 between the opposed ends of pipes 10, 11, first and second means respectively for independently clamping the gasket against the ends of the pipes to effect an annular seal therewith, the said means being independently movable with respect to one another, and means for resiliently connecting the pipes. The glass pipes have flared ends 40, 41 between which and bands 14, 15 are continuous or split wedgesection asbestos rings 12, 13, the latter being forced towards each other by clamping rings 16, 17 connected by screws 23, 24 to inner clamping rings 21, 22 which press the edge portions 19, 20 of the gasket against the pipes. The rings 21, 22 are provided with annular gaskets 29, 30, formed with conical or spherical surfaces and preferably of tetrafluoroethylene, which are in contact with similar gaskets 31, 32 on retraining bands 27, 28. The flexible gasket is of tetrafluoroethylene, has annular beads 55, 56 which fit into grooves in the pipes and has bonded thereto a rigid reinforcing ring 33 of tetrafluoroethylene; resilient annular bands 34, 35 of a silicone rubber assist in preventing deformation of the gasket 18 when the latter is under high pressures.
