Abstract

In a compound brake arrangement comprising a shoe brake and a disc brake applied to a brake disc 12 formed by the rim of a railway vehicle wheel, the shoe brake is provided with a brake shoe 11 which is mounted on a longitudinally and angularly movable actuating rod 21 pivoted at 22 to a pivoted lever 23 such that when the actuating rod 21 is moved longitudinally by a ram 27 to apply the shoe brake the actuating rod 21 may also move angularly to actuate a wedge and roller cam device 36, 37 (Fig. 2, not shown), which causes the disc brake to operate, means being provided for preventing angular movement of the actuating rod 21 when the brake shoe 11 is retracted and comprising a fixed frusto-conical member 30 adapted to co-operate with a further frusto-conical member 32 mounted on or integral with the actuating rod 21. The disc brake comprises two pivotally mounted pincer arms 14 which are disposed on opposite sides of the brake disc 12, the cam device 36, 37 (Fig. 2, not shown), being operable against the force of a return spring (not shown) to effect simultaneous pivotal movement of the two pincer arms into and out of an operative position in which the brake pads 15 carried by the pincer arms make braking contact with the brake disc. The cam 36 (not shown) is connected to a push-rod 35 which is moved longitudinally on angular movement of the actuating rod 21, the cam 36 being disposed between and engaging the two pincer arms 13 to spread the arms apart.
