Abstract

1,066,442. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. March 4, 1964 [March 15, 1963], No. 10270/63. Heading F2E. A brake comprises a rotatable disc 11 a minor portion of which is straddled by a non-rotatable support 10 for a thrust device 12 which moves its associated friction element 17 towards the disc 11 along an axis inclined to the plane of the disc, said support 10 having a surface at 26 parallel to the axis of movement of the friction element against which engages one end 27 of a rigid link 22 pivotally connected at 23 to the friction element 17 in such a manner that the end 27 is progressively movable along the abutment surface towards the disc as wear takes place on the friction element. The link. 22 is approximately perpendicular to the axes of movement and is moved up the surface on release of the brake by a spring 29 on the pivot 23. The end of the link 22 engages the inner face at 26 with a pin 27 when the disc is moving in the forward direction (near edge upwards in Fig. 2) and passes through a slot to engage the outer face with a pin 28 when the disc is moving in the reverse direction. A lever 31 attached to the sheath 37 of a control cable 38 is pivoted on the support 10 at 33 to provide alternative means for operating the element 17 through a link 40. A second friction element 20 on the opposite side of the disc 11 is rigidly fixed to the housing 10 which has sufficient axial movement to enable the reaction forces to engage the element 20 when the brake is applied. The piston 16 of the hydraulic thrust device 12 is tiltable in its cylinder to allow for transverse movement of the friction element. Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates an alternative embodiment which overcomes to some extent the disparity that exists between the braking force at forward and at reverse movement of the vehicle due to the servo action. In Fig. 3, the pivot pin 23 is secured rigidly to the inner end of the link 22 and is located in a cam slot having its longitudinal axis at right angles to the axis of movement of the friction element. Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates a form of the invention which has no alternative mechanical means of operation and is suitable for use on the front wheels of a vehicle. In this embodiment a link somewhat different to that at 22 of Fig. 2 is pivoted to the friction element and is urged by a spring as at 23 and 29 of Fig. 2; the outer end of the link does not extend through the surface 26, but is rounded to form a cam which acts upon the inner side only of the surface 26.
