Abstract

1,047,155. Spin drying. MAY-FRAN MANUFACTURING CO. May 4, 1964, No. 18400/64. Heading F4G. A spin drier for removing liquid from metal scrap comprises a shaft 10 driven by belting from a motor 20 to which shaft is connected a bell-shaped housing 28 having an inverted frusto-conical scrap deflector 36 spacedly mounted therein on the shaft to define a passageway therebetween, and an inverted frustoconical member 42 is spacedly secured by fasteners 50 to the housing 28 so as to extend outwardly and upwardly above the peripheral edge 38 of the housing 28. The member 42 is also secured to the shaft 10 by a spider 44 having arms 48 which also act as rotatable downdraught fan blades to provide stability. The scrap is fed by a screw conveyer 24 to the open hopper portion 26 of the housing 28 to drop on the deflector 36 and thereafter is forced downwardly by the inclination of the wall surface 30 of the housing and is assisted by pressure of scrap continuously fed into the hopper. The liquids adhering to the scrap are centrifuged to the surface 30 and forced downwardly until they are forced across the gap between the members 28, and 42 on to the inner wall surface 60 of the member, which due to its upward and outward configuration passes to a stationary reservoir 64. The scrap is collected at the base of the drier and continuously removed by a screw conveyer 72. Various modifications are described in which the deflector may be of plate-form or the deflector may be filled with liquid for stabilization purposes.
