Abstract

1,121,258. Cooling sand. NEWAYGO ENG. CO. 21 March, 1967 [30 March, 1966], No. 13148/67. Heading F4U. Sand to be cooled is fed through a hopper 30 having outlets 32 at its lower edge on to the imperforate centre of an otherwise perforated rotating disc 36, the sand being cooled and kept in suspension while moving radially outwardly across the disc by air from a plenum chamber 90. Sets 20, 20a of beaters are arranged in the sand which is removed from the periphery of the disc by an adjustable plough (Fig. 2, not shown) arranged in an opening in the peripheral wall 40 of the device. Diametrically opposed air compressors 92, 94 supply the annular plenum chamber, the height of the latter decreasing from a maximum at the location of each compressor to a minimum at the location midway between the compressors. Water may be sprayed into the sand to assist in cooling and the device preferably has a cover formed with air outlets (Fig. 1, not shown). The pitch of the paddles in sets 20, 20a is such that the inner paddle blades tend to move the sand radially outwardly while the outer blades tend to move the sand in the reverse direction to prevent build-up of sand on the periphery of the disc.
