Abstract
1,046,856. Jointing. LIPS N.V. Dec. 9, 1963 [Dec. 13, 1962], No. 47192/62. Heading B3V. A method of connecting two members 1, 2 together comprises sealing the ends of the outer member 2 about the inner member, filling the space between the members with uncured resin under pressure so as to expand the outer member 2, and maintaining the pressures during setting of the resin. The method may be used to connect a gear-wheel to a shaft, a flange to a pipe or shaft, or a sleeve to a ship's propeller shaft. Rigid plastics such as nylon may also be connected. The sleeve 2 is sealed by 0-rings 7, 8 bearing on glands 9, 10, which may be bolted to the sleeve or pressed towards each other by members urged together as by steel ropes. Trestles 3, 4 support the members with an exhaust hole 6 uppermost and a supply hole underneath which is connected to a container 11 for a resin, such as the epoxy resin known by the Registered Trade Mark " Araldite " and a hardener. A floating piston in the container may separate the resin from compressed air or nitrogen from a bottle 13. After air has escaped through the hole 6, this is plugged and the sleeve 2 expanded. The lower hole 5 may then be plugged or left connected to the resin supply during the setting process. The sleeve contracts against the resin, which has an adhesive action on the shaft and sleeve. It is stated that the sleeve may be loosened by heating to 270‹ C.
