Abstract

1,046,682. Spanners. G. K. SCHENKER. Aug. 27, 1965 [March 25, 1965], No. 12693/65. Heading B4W. In the working end of a spanner there is provided a ball 1 which has a socket formation or shank formation therein or thereon, the ball being so mounted as to rock in any direction and being free to rotate in one direction about the axis of the socket formation or shank formation. The ball 1 has a square hole passing therethrough which may serve to engage the work directly or to receive a shank 2 which serves for engaging a socket head 5. Other shank and socket arrangements are described. The body of the spanner comprises laminates A-D each having an enlarged cut-out head to accommodate the ball 1, and handle portions 6-9. The two halves of the handle are held rigidly together by rivets 14. Recesses 12 are cut out in laminates B and C to accommodate roller bearings 11, the recesses being shaped to allow springs 13 to act on bearings 11 so as to maintain the bearings 11 in contact with the ball 1 and the bottoms of recesses 12. The ball is thus free to rock in any direction and free to rotate in one direction about the axis of the shank 2 while being prevented from rotation in the other direction due to jamming action of the rollers 11.
