Abstract

1356532 Hand screwdriver or wrench STANLEY TOOLS Ltd 11 Sept 1972 [10 Sept 1971] 42048/72 Heading B3N A rotary hand tool comprises a handle 6, a shank 7 and a coupling mechanism 8 to provide a ratcheting effect, the coupling mechanism consists of at least one roller element 18 engageable with the shank and located between the shank and selectively one or other of two wall portions 17A, 17B associated with the handle and roller element positioning means 19 selectively controllable to position the roller element between the shank and one or other of the wall portions. The handle is made of plastics and has a metal housing 14 therein with a liner 16 along a portion thereof that has grooves 17 into which rollers 18 fit. Member 19 forms a roller cage by which the positioning of rollers 19 can be determined. A forward portion of member 19 has two grooves 26, 27 into which a pin 28 and an indexing ball 31 fit. Groove 27 has a bump 33 so that ball 31 locates rollers 18 in one of two positions. A retaining spring 29 keeps the pin and ball correctly positioned. As shown in Fig. 3, clockwise rotation of handle 6 causes balls 18 to grip shaft 7. Reverse rotation produces no turning of member 7.
