Abstract
1,046,282. Conditioning chromatography plates. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY (EURATOM). Jan. 7, 1964 [Jan. 11, 1963: Feb. 18,1963], No. 752/64. Heading B1X. A thin-layer chromatography apparatus comprises a closed conditioning chamber in which a predetermined relative humidity can be formed, means for holding a thin layer chromatography plate in the chamber until it has reached equilibrium with the predetermined relative humidity, means for introducing eluent into the chamber and means for bringing the preconditioned chromatography plate into contact with the eluent. In the apparatus of Figs. 1 and 5 (5 not shown), chromatography plate 13 mounted in frame plate 14 is inserted into tubular elution tank through slot 21. The plate assembly is initially held together by spring clamp 15. Polytetrafluoroethylene wedges or cones 8 are mounted on rods 7; when screws 10 are loosened rods 7 slide downwards so that wedges 8 force the plates apart, so exposing the chromatography plate to the controlled atmosphere within chamber 1. Eluent is introduced into tank 3 by means of funnel 5. In the embodiment of Fig. 6 (not shown), the plate 9 is suspended in jacketed chamber 1. Dry nitrogen or humid air can flow in at 4. Eluent introduced at 3 passes to a perforated glass ring B and hence to filter paper A hung against the inner wall of chamber 1. The plate may be immersed in the eluent collected at the bottom of the chamber by loosening screw 10.
