Abstract

1,025,103. Chromatography apparatus. SHANDON SCIENTIFIC CO. Ltd. June 8,1962 [Aug. 2,1961], No. 28008/61. Addition to 873, 880 Heading BlX. . An apparatus for paper chromatography comprises a vertical cyclindrical vessel 1, the upper end portion being of greater diameter thereby providing an annular seating 2 which supports a diametrically extending solvent trough 3 which is provided at its ends (see Fig. 2) with extensions 6 of greater width than the trough to form a stable mounting. Paper strips 9, anchored within trough 3 by means of an anchor rod 8, pass over the antisyphon rods 7 and depend in vessel 1 clear of the sides of trough 3 and of vessel 1. Vessel 1 is sealed by a cover plate 12 provided with a pair of apertures 14, closed by removable plugs 15, for the introduction of materials into the vessel when cover plate 12 is in place. The apparatus may be used for both ascending and descending chromatography, and, in the former case, trough 3 merely acts as a support for the paper strips whilst the solvent used is placed in the bottom of vessel 1. Preferably vessel 1 is formed of glass, and trough 3 and cover 12 are formed of polyethylene.
