Abstract

1,046,261. Rotary compressors. JAMES HOWDEN & CO. Ltd. Feb. 17, 1964 [Feb. 23, 1963], No. 7372/63. Heading F1F. In a two-stage, intermeshing screw air compressor, comprising in each stage a male and female rotor, one rotor from each stage is mounted on a common shaft supported on only two bearings located at each end of the first stage. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, an oilinjected air compressor 10 having first and second stages 15, 16 includes parallel shafts 11, 12 mounting respectively first and second stage male rotors 13, 14, and first and second stage female rotors 19, 20, with the helixes of the second stage rotors of opposite hand to those of the first stage rotors so that the outlet 37 from the first stage is adjacent the outlet 39 of the second stage to enable axial thrust loads on the two shafts to be substantially cancelled out and so permit the use of only two bearings 30, 31 on each shaft and the shorter second stage rotors 14, 20 to overhang with respect to the bearings 31. In the embodiment shown, the diameters of the rotors of the second stage are identical with those of the first stage. In another embodiment, in which the diameters of the second stage rotors are less than those of the first stage rotors, only one shaft is common to a rotor in each stage, the female rotors being mounted on separate shafts bearingly supported at either end. The male and female rotors of the second stage may be transposed so that instead of carrying two male rotors or two female rotors, the common shaft carries a male rotor and a female rotor. The female rotor of the second stage instead of being keyed to its shaft may rotate freely on bearings on a stationary shaft.
