Abstract

1,046,161. Watches. GESELLSCHAFT ZUR FORDERUNG DER FORSCHUNG AN DER EIDGENOSSISCHEN TECHNISCHEN HOCHSCHULE. Jan. 9, 1964 [Jan.22, 1963], No.1024/64. Heading G3T. [Also in Division H3] A pocket or wrist watch comprises an electric oscillator 10, block diagram Fig. 1 (not shown), stabilized by a standard frequency resonance element 11 and connected through an electronic frequency reducer 13 to an electromechanical transducer 14 which drives a mechanical time-indicator 15. The frequency reducer is provided with a backward diode as an active member. As shown, the frequency reducer includes a relaxation oscillator comprising the backward diode D 1 with an inductance L, an ohmic loss resistor R, and a D.C. source B of terminal voltage E B . The backward diode has the characteristic K D , Fig. 4 (not shown), and differs from a tunnel diode in that its peak current is only about 1 to 5 microamperes compared with a few milliamperes in the tunnel diode, and an A.C. voltage produced across it with a frequency f is passed to output terminals 18, 19 via a separating capacitor C 2 . The controlling voltage U<SP>1</SP> is fed with positive polarity to the backward diode D through an input circuit comprising a capacitor C 1 and two diodes D 1 and D 2 . The voltage E B and the loss resistor R are selected so that the rectilinear characteristic K R of the loss resistor intersects the diode characteristic K D at a point P inside the negative resistance region. It is shown that the output voltage (Fig. 5 not shown) will follow the cycle indicated by the arrowed loop in Fig. 4. The frequency ratio f o /f may be up to about 15, e.g. f 0 = 4500 c/s and f = 300 c/s. Two similar reducers in series may be used so that with a standard frequency f 0 of 11, 250 c/s, a feed frequency of 50 c/s to the transducer 14 is obtained. The resonance element may be a torsional or flexural element, or a piezoelectric or magnetostrictive element, and may be in a vacuum-tight enclosure. Oscillator 10 may also be a relaxation oscillator, fitted with backward diodes, and is fed from a battery 10. The device enables a resonance element of high frequency to be used with the object of improving the accuracy of timekeeping and avoiding disturbance from gravity or vibration.
