Abstract

1353176 Electric timepieces SIEMENS AG 15 July 1971 [17 July 1970] 33260/71 Addition to 1312996 Heading G3T [Also in Division F2] A frequency stabilized drive for a timepiece wherein a Piezo-electrically driven tuning fork 1 actuates a drive wheel 8 through a coupling 7 has a second, smaller tuning fork 4 electrically or mechanically coupled to the first fork and consisting of metal, the free ends of the prongs of the fork 4 carrying weights 5 which match the resonant frequency of these prongs to the fundamental frequency of the fork 1 whereby the second fork serves as a narrow band frequency standard. As shown, the prongs of fork 1 comprise Piezoelectric bimorphs and the right-hand (driving) prong is driven by a transistor oscillator. The left-hand prong produces a voltage which is applied to a Piezo-electric element 6 on one prong of the fork 4 and a similar element 6 on the other prong produces a feedback voltage for controlling the oscillator. Wheel 8 may comprise a conventional toothed wheel in which case the feedback voltage is applied directly to the oscillator. Alternatively, as shown, wheel 8 has a smooth surface and is formed of material into which the latch 7 sinks on the drive stroke and slides along on the return stroke. In this case the wheel carries magnetic elements 9 of alternate polarity which cooperate with a detector coil S in series between the fork 4 and the oscillator, the signals produced by coil S being compared with those produced by fork 4 so that the oscillator is also controlled in accordance with the desired speed of wheel 8. The oscillator may utilize a field-effect transistor or a pair of transistors connected in a Darlington circuit.
