Abstract

1,186,065. Dynamo-electric machines. BULOVA WATCH CO. Inc. 2 June, 1967 [13 June, 1966], No. 25682/67. Heading H2A. [Also in Division G3] An electromagnetically actuated mechanical oscillating system e.g. a tuning fork oscillator for actuating an electronic timepiece, comprises a mechanical oscillator, e.g. a tuning fork having a pair of oscillating members 10, 11, and an electronic circuit assembly 17 including a drive coil 23 and a sensing coil 24 carried by an oscillating member 11 and extending into or disposed in an air gap in a magnetic element 16 carried by the other oscillating member 10, the electronic circuit being caused -to generate current pulses in the drive coil each creating a magnetic force imparting a momentum to the magnetic element 16 and on opposite momentum to the assembly 17. In the operation of the tuning fork oscillator illustrated control pulses generated in the sensing coil 24 render a transistor 25 conductive to provide the current pulses in the drive coil 24. A battery 29 is connected to the coil 23 via a slender U-shaped metal spring 32. A pawl 13 on the tine 10 actuates a ratchet wheel 14 to a drive timepiece in known manner. Other embodiments are described in which the magnetic element is 'of horseshoe shape or is of multiple construction to provide two air gaps. The mechanical oscillating system may alternatively comprise a torsional fork, a pair of torsional pendulums, or a pair of vibrating reeds.
