[Also in Division D1] Apparatus for winding a web of fabric which has been cut longitudinally and thereby divided into a plurality of narrow bands, comprises a plurality of winding sleeves 3 on which the bands are wound and adapted frictionally to be coupled to a rotatable shaft 2 and at least one friction coupling device for each sleeve 3, to couple the sleeve 3 to the shaft 2, whereby rotational motion may be imparted thereto, each friction coupling device including a cylindrical housing 8 mounted to and within one end of the sleeve 3, first friction means 7 keyed to the housing 8, second friction means 6 keyed to the shaft 2 and both contained within the housing 8 and being capable of axial movement relative to the housing 8 and means whereby means 6, 7 may be moved into and out of frictional engagement with each other. As shown, a friction coupling device is provided at each end of each sleeve 3 having flanged discs 10 connected thereto. The means 6, 7 comprise a plurality of nose rings engaging, respectively, in a groove 20 in the shaft 2 and in a groove 14 in the associated housing 8. Annular friction lining discs 9, e.g. of felt or plastics material, are provided between the rings 6, 7. Spacer rings (not shown) mounted to slide axially on the shaft 2 occupy the gaps between adjoining housings 8. The spacer rings and the housings 8 together form a block which at one end is bounded by an adjusting ring (not shown) detachably connected to the shaft 2 to prevent unintentional sliding of the block thereon and at the other end by a pressure member (also not shown). When axial pressure, selected to obtain sufficiently firmly wound rolls 1, is applied by the pressure member to the adjacent housing 8 towards the adjusting ring, this pressure is applied to the entire block so that each friction drive, i.e. the rings 6, 7, 9 and the housings 8, is compressed and rotation of the shaft 2 causes rotation of the sleeves 3. Since each housing 8 is coupled independently by friction to the shaft 2, each sleeve 3 can slip frictionally independently on the shaft. A circlip 15 projects into a channel 16 in a large outer nose ring 6 in each housing 8 to retain the rings 6, 7, 9 in the housing 8.
