The invention relates to dyeing devices, which are equipped with pairs of horizontal rollers which are pressed in contact with one another and which form a trough-shaped reservoir above the horizontal contact generatrix of the cylinders of the rollers, said reservoir being adapted for receiving dye or other fluid, semi-fluid or pasty material. It is, therefore, one or the objects of the invention to provide improved dyeing devices of the aforesaid type, in which a pair of rollers are used, for example, for dyeing or dressing fabrics, by feeding the fabric into the troughreservoir from which it issues after having passed through the dye or the dressing material while passing between said horizontal rollers. The invention is also applicable to printing machines, for effecting the feeding of the dye to the engraved roller so that the known device comprising a frame, a dye feed roller and a scraper may be dispensed with.
The difiiculties which are encountered in the construction and operation of a pair of rollers forming said dye reservoir result from, the requirement of providing a liquid-tight surface for the trough reservoir whose boundaries are constituted by the cylindrical surfaces of the rollers.
The invention has for a further object to provide means at the end of the pairs of rollers facilitating a liquid-tight seal which is both simple and eillcient, and associated with the movable shafts of the rollers.
For this purpose, the invention contemplates as a still further object the provision or" a, fiuidtight side plate or flange which is mounted on the shaft of one of the rollers, is of sufiicient size to form a fiat end wall for the trough having otherwise cylindrical side walls, and is pressed, by means of spring, hydraulic or similar device against the corresponding end surfaces of the said rollers.
The invention has also for an object the arrangement of pairs of rollers and grouping of three rollers arranged in a manner to form either two separate trough-reservoirs, placed on either side of a central roller, or a single trough-reservoir between the three rollers.
Embodiments of such devices comprising pairs of rollers forming a trough-reservoir are described hereinafter and diagrammatically illustrated, simply by way of non-limitative examples, in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is an end view of the device embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a plan and a horizontal sectional View of a detail, on a larger scale, showing the means for pressing one or the end plates, the means provided for the other plate being identical,
Fig. 4 is an end view of a group of three rollers,
Fig. 5 is a modified form of the arrangement seen in Fig. 3.
As regards the device of Figs. 1 to 3, l and 2 are rollers with one and the same diameter, whose axes lie in the same horizontal plane and which are pressed in contact with one another by mechanical or hydraulic means. The rollers l and 2 are each provided at one of their ends with a plate or cheek t, forming a liquid-tight seal and sliding with running friction on the shaft by which said check is carried and pressed against the respective races of the rollers by appropriate means. Each of the cheeks 3 is of greater diameter than the rollers I and 2, such that the surface of the cheek bears not only against the end of one of the rollers on the shaft of which it is mounted, but also against a part of the end of the other roller, and that thus each of the cheeks 3 forms a flat end wall for the trough 5- which is formed within the space between the rollers l and 2. In this manner, the device can be used as a reservoir for dye, dressing, or other fluid, semi-fluid or pasty preparation.
The pressure means of each of the cheeks 3 are, in the embodiment illustrated, constituted as follows:
The shaft 5 of the roller is provided with a blind axial bore or hole as, serving as a housing for the pressure exerting structure, which housing includes rectangular radial openings '7, i. The hub 3 of the check 3 is also provided with corresponding radial openings of the same width but shorter length; a key 3 may be lodged in said openings. Said key is subjected to the pressure of a head 9 formed at the end of a stem iii, the said head engaging a slot ii provided in key 8 and being pressed against said key by a helical spring it which bears, on the other hand, against a sleeve it which can slide in the bore 5 by means of ears it engaged in grooves i l of said bore. The sleeve it is tapped so as to form a nut on a screw-threaded rod to which can be operated from the outside by its square head Et thereby enabling the tension of the spring 2 to be adjusted. The rod is is provided with an axial bore so as to accommodate the rod it which terminates in the head 9.
It is possible, by pulling the end of the rod ID to release the key 8 from engagement with the head 9, thereby enabling the key to be withdrawn and the cheek 3 to be removed.
The two rollers are preferably provided with a rubber platen It which extends slightly beyond the end of the metal cylinder, so that liquidtightness is better ensured upon engagement with the cheeks 3.
The fact of providing one of the cheeks 3 on the roller 8 and the other on the roller 2 considerably reduces wear owing to the fact that the platen of each roller wears symmetrically at each end.
It is however possible to provide the two checks ,3 on one and the same roller.
In certaincases, it is possible to interpose, between the cheek 3 and the corresponding roller, a disc ll, of ebonite for example, which is mounted with a running fit, like the cheek 3, on the shaft 5 of the roller.
The improvement according to the invention enables groups of three rollers arranged in accordance with the same principle, to be constructed in a simple manner.
In the assembly of Fig. 4, two rollers 2, '2' are pressed in contact against a central roller l,-the axes of the three rollers being located in a common horizontal plane. The roller I carries, at eachend, a liquid-tight cheek 3 which ispressed simultaneously against the, said roller ,1 and against the rollers 2 and 2"; the diameter of the circular cheek being sufficient to form a liquidtight wall for the trough-reservoirs 4, 4"through which the fabric successively passes.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 5,itwo rollers '2 and 2' are pressed tangentially against the upper part of the periphery of the roller l which carries at each end a cheek 3 ensuringithe liquid-tightness of the single trough-reservoir 4, the fabric 18 successively passing between the pairs, l2 then 'l'2" with an intermediate devi'a'ting guide-roller l9.
It is of course understood that it is possible, without exceeding the scope of the invention, to imagine changes, improvement of details andthe use of equivalent means.
Having, thus described the invention, what is,
