Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A device for tensioning a number of strips to be wound about a common mandrel comprises a separate tensioning roller having a plurality of freely-rotating crowns which can be braked by an axially exerted force, and a casing partially housing the roller into which air or compressed gas is introduced to force the strips into contact with the crowns. Fig. 1 illustrates a general arrangement in which strips are led round a barrel 1 fixed to arbour 3; the strips are pressed into contact with freely rotating crowns 4 by means of air or compressed gas introduced through inlets 16 into casing 15, an effective seal 17 between the casing and the strips being provided. Fig. 3 illustrates the braking system which ensures a constant braking action on strips, e.g. 20, 21, led around the roller. The crowns 4 are separated from each other by thin friction discs 5 which engage at 6 with longitudinal grooves 7 in the barrel 1; the discs therefore rotate with the barrel, and both the discs and the crowns are axially slidable. The barrel carries a fixed annular abutment (8) at one end (Fig. 2, not shown), and a further fixed abutment 9 at the other end; an annular interposed piece 13 is movable under the controlled action of inflatable toric tube 11 to force the crowns 4 against the discs 5, thus braking the rotation of the crowns and applying a uniform tension to the strips. The barrel 1 and arbour 3 can, if desired, be given a controlled rotation.
