Abstract

1,045,062. Screw propulsion units. J. MOLAS, G. MOLAS, and B. ZIMMERN. Jan. 29, 1965, No. 4008/65. Heading B7V. When operatively fitted, a screw propulsion unit for boats comprises a substantially vertical driving shaft 1, Fig. 2 (not shown), on which is mounted a propeller 2 having a mean plane of rotation perpendicular to the shaft, and mounted on the fixed tubular casing 5 round the shaft there is a shield 29 which bears a series of fixed inlet deflector blades 39 and a series of fixed outlet deflector blades 40. The inlet deflector blades 39, some of which are located above the mean plane of rotation of the propeller, have a profile adapted to guide the streams of water towards the propeller and the outlet deflector blades, some of which are located below that plane have a profile which conveys the streams beyond the propeller. The propeller rotates in one direction only. The shield 29 can be rotated into three positions I, II, III, Fig. 1 (not shown). As illustrated in Fig. 2, it is in position I and forward motion in direction Q is produced by rotation of the propeller. Shield position II is symmetrical with respect to the shaft and no propulsive thrust ensues. Shield position III gives movement astern. In other embodiments the shield 29 is rigidly mounted and either houses a propeller of reversible pitch, or its outlet deflector blades 40 are movable.
