Abstract

1,044,917. Rotary-piston I.C. engines. CURTISS-WRIGHT CORPORATION. July 15, 1963 [July 24, 1962], No. 27980/63. Heading F1F. A rotary-piston I.C. of the trochoidal n and n + 1 lobe type comprises a piston or rotor 24 (Figs. 1 to 3, not shown) lodged in a housing 10 which includes a peripheral wall 12 whose axial length exceeds that of the piston so that it engages with inwardly-directed central projecting-portions 66, 68 on adjacent end walls 14, 16, respectively. Each of said portions has an outer peripheral-shape substantially identical to the profile of the innermost surface of the wall 12 and is rendered closely fitting therewith whereby thermal distortion of the wall 12 is minimized. The innermost surface of the wall 12 may be plated with a wear-resisting material 32 e.g. chromium or steel, the plating being extended beyond the axial width of the piston to minimize chipping of the material. Cooling fins 60, or ribs 58, may be formed on the exterior of the wall 12 to render it rigid and improve heat dissipation. A gear-wheel 42 attached to the wall 16 has an axial extension forming a bearing for a power-output shaft 18 and meshes with an internally-toothed gear-wheel 34 attached to the piston. Gas sealing-rings 56 between the wall 12 and each of the walls 14, 16 may be made of an asbestos compound.
