Abstract

Newsprint paper is made from a chemical ground wood pulp derived from Hevea wood. The wood, in the form of chips is soaked in a 1-2% solution of sodium sulphite, heated and maintained at 150-170 DEG for up to one hour. The residual liquor may be fortified by adding sodium sulphite and reused. The treated wood is defibered in a refiner or a hammer mill, and may be blended with 5 to 20% of another pulp for use in making newsprint. The other pulp may be semibleached soft-wood sulphate pulp, bleached spruce sulphite pulp or semibleached Hevea sulphate pulp.
