[Also in Division F4] A rotary hearth sinter machine 1 is charged by a roller conveyer 2, Fig. 1, the lengths of the discharge edges of the rollers varying proportionally with their distance from the centre of rotation of the hearth 1. The conveyer may extend radially inwards from the periphery, or may extend at an angle to the radius as at 3. In a modification. Fig. 2 (not shown), a roller conveyer with its discharge edges extending in the opposite direction to the rotation of the hearth is combined with a conveyer having its discharge edges extending in the direction of rotation. Marginal protective material can be fed along the edges of the roller conveyers. A roller conveyer 7 (Fig. 3, not shown), may feed material from the centre of the hearth. It also has a hopper 8 having slots 10 extending in the direction of travel of the hearth and of arcuate length proportional to the distance from the centre may be used. In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), a roller conveyer 15 with its discharge edge 19 in the radial direction of the annular grate 1 is fed by a belt conveyer 16 and the material so fed is distributed in proportion to the radial distances by pivotally and horizontally adjustable guide plates 17. The required distribution may also be obtained by tilting the conveyer about its discharge edge 19 and also about its lateral edge 21 on a lateral pivot 20. In this case the plates 17 may be dispensed with. In further modifications, the roller conveyer 15 is fed by a reciprocating or swinging conveyer belt the discharge edge of which has its greatest speed near the inner periphery and its least speed near the outer periphery of the grate. In this case the belt speed is constant. However, the speed of reciprocation may be constant and the the belt speed may vary with the point of discharge being greatest at the outer periphery of the grate. The belt conveyer may be used without the roller conveyer or the plates 17 or the pivot 20. In a further modification, a roller conveyer having discharge edges extending in a tangential direction to the grate is followed in the direction of rotation of the grate by a hopper having a discharge slot tapering radially inwardly of the grate and having a trailing edge which acts as a scraper. Alternatively a separate vertically. displaceable scraper may be provided.
