A sliding door is attached to two parallel pistons 32, 33 working in a power air cylinder 30 and a check air cylinder 31 respectively, the reservoir 37 in the pneumatic circuit having a capacity less than that of the power cylinder and the flow rate to the reservoir through line 40 and needle valve 46 being substantially less than that from the reservoir to the cylinder through line 38, so that the opening of the door is initially fast, but finally slow to avoid rebound of the door from its stop. When switch A, e.g. a carpet switch is closed, solenoid valve 39 opens and solenoid valve 50 closes and connects the left hand end of the power cylinder to atmosphere, and thus air enters the right hand end of the cylinder to open the door. When switch A opens, valves 39, 50 change r¶les to close the door. Air pressure is maintained by a motor driven pump 42 from an air supply 41. An isolator valve 44 and a strainer 43 are provided. Valves 45 and 48 are pressure regulating valves which are adjusted for the reservoir to be totally replenished during the closing of the door.
