Abstract

689,688. Hydraulic machines. BRITISH MESSIER, Ltd. Sept. 13, 1950 [Sept. 14, 1949 ; Nov. 21, 1949], Nos. 23746/49 and 29783/49. Class 69 (ii). Leakage of working fluid from the pressure to the return side of a motor element, e.g. a jack piston 24, Fig. 2, is effected through a narrow aperture 57 and a passage 53 in series therewith controlled by a valve 54 which is normally held closed during movement of the piston and is opened at the end of the stroke, the valve port being of greater crosssectional area than the aperture 57. The valve 54 is opened against a spring 55 by a lifting member 58 itself actuated by a tappet 60 connected to a sleeve 62 by a cross-pin 61 slidable within a slot 63 in the piston rod 25. The leakage fluid exhausts through a space 65 to a line 19. In a modification the valve comprises a ball floating between two springs and the lifting member is eliminated. In a further modification wherein leakage through the piston 24, Fig. 3, is controlled from the other end of the jack the narrow aperture comprises a bored plug 72 at the end of the space 65 and in a still further modification a spring- biased lift valve is operated by a solenoid energised automatically at the end of the piston stroke. The controlled leakage serves to prevent freezing of the working fluid, and in operation a supply pump 11, Fig. 1, draws fluid from a sump 21 and delivers it through a by-pass valve 13 and a distributer 15 to the lower side of the piston 24 which at the end of its stroke allows restricted flow through a line 18, the distributer 15 and a line 20 back to the sump 21. An electrically-driven auxiliary pump 30 may replace the pump 11 and draw from the sump 21 through a duct 36 and deliver through a line 37 and the valve 15 to one or other side of the piston 24. The leakage construction may be applied to a jack having a locking device as described in Specification 527,225.
