May 29, 1964 [June 5, 1963], No.22321/64. Headings F2B, F2E, F2F and F2T. In a disc brake actuator cylinder a ring gasket 7, 8 of substantially rectangular crosssection when unstressed is disposed in a groove of trapezoidal cross-section in the cylinder wall 5, 6 (Fig. 1) or in the piston 4 (Fig. 2), and is stressed radially into sealing engagement with the cylinder wall or piston so as to take the shape of the groove, the latter having substantially parallel side walls and a base inclined thereto. The groove is chamfered at 9 or 10 to leave an annular chamber between the groove wall, the sealing surface and the ring gasket such that when the brake is applied the piston moves the gasket which slides up on the wedge surface 15 is deformed and forced into the annular chamber 9, 10. When the disc returns to its normal plane of rotation the gasket is released and returns to the position illustrated in which it urges the piston 3, 4 out of the cylinder 5, 6 towards the brake disc 1. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, when disc wobble occurs, the piston 4 is forced into the working chamber 13 and since the gasket 8 still engages with the sealing surface 17 of the cylinder the gasket 8 slides along the wedge surface 19 and is forced into the annular chamber 10. When the disc returns to its normal plane of rotation the gasket 8 is released and forces the piston 4 out of the cylinder 6 towards the brake disc 1. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 3e, not shown) the gasket 7 is rebated and the gasket is formed with a round groove which, because of the prestressing, applies suction to the sealing surface.
