Abstract

1353294 Brake cylinders; shaft seals ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 2 March 1972 [3 March 1971] 9681/72 Headings F2F and F2B The piston-rod 8 of a compressed air operated brake cylinder 1 is sealed in an end wall 10 by a seal 15 of plastics material having a groove 16 engaged in an aperture 14 of the wall and maintained annular by a metal reinforcing ring of L-shaped cross-section encased in the plastics material, the seal also having an annular sealing lip 18 pressed against the rod 8 by a garter spring 19. A metal reinforcing ring 20 maintains lip 18 annular and a non-reinforced annular portion 21 of seal 15 being flexible permits radial movement of the lip 18 relative to groove 16. A boot 22 or a further lip 26, Fig. 2 (not shown), may be provided to protect against dust. In a further embodiment an annular abutment plate 30, Fig. 3 (not shown), is provided with tongues (31) to centre a seal retaining ring (32) the outer portion of which abuts end wall 10 and the inner portion is spaced from the bottom of the wall to define an annular groove (29) receiving a seal (35). Seal (35) has an axially directed sealing lip (36) having a sealing lip (36) pressed against end wall 10. A further lip (40) seals the rod 8 both seals being firmly pressed on by a reinforcing ring 41, and seal (40) being additionally stressed by a garter spring (42). It is stated that the brake cylinder is used in an anti-skid system in which it is both compressed air applied and released.
