A magnetic filter unit, Fig. 3, is removed from a filter housing 14, Fig. 1, without interrupting flow by moving it along a track 28 and through valve means 18, 19 into one or other of chambers 22, 23. The unit is held in the operating position, indicated by chain-lines 30, and when it is desired to change the filter, the clean unit is inserted in the chamber 22 and a valve 24 closed before the valves 20, 21 are opened; the clean and used units are then pushed along the track 28 and, when the clean unit is in the operating position and the used unit is in the discharge position within the chamber 23, the valve 21 between the units is closed and a valve 25 at the end of the chamber 23 opened to permit the withdrawal of the used unit. The chambers may be of rectangular or circular cross-section and if desired, the unit may be mounted on a carriage 33. The unit is in the form of castellated permanent magnet pole pieces 2 housing magnetizable barcages 10, 11; alternatively, the unit may be in the form of cylindrical pole pieces between which are disposed spaced-apart magnetizable ring-units 8, Fig. 2 (not shown).
