Abstract

Polymers containing aliphatic carbon-to-carbon double bonds or aromatic nuclei are reacted in solution, suspension or in the solid state with aldehydes of formula R-CHO, where R is halogen, -CO-, <FORM:1041539/C3/1> X-C6H4- or X2-C6H3-, X being halogen, by heating in an inert atmosphere at 20 DEG to 240 DEG C. Specified polymers are natural rubber, polybutadiene, polyisoprene, butadiene-styrene copolymer, isobutylene-isoprene copolymer and polystyrene. Specified aldehydes are chloral bromal, fluoral, glyoxal, glycidic aldehyde, dicrotonic aldehyde, 4-fluoro-benzaldehyde and 2-4-dichlorobenzaldehyde. The aldehyde may be used as such, as a hydrate or as a polymer. Free-radical producing or conic catalysts may be present.
