Abstract
Rubber reaction products are obtained by heating an aqueous dispersion of rubber in the presence of acid and a protective colloid, with an aldehyde such as formaldehyde or acetaldehyde or substance capable of splitting off an aldehyde such as trioxymethylene or polyoxymethylene under such conditions of time, temperature and acid concentration that substantial isomerization of the rubber, as determined by titrating a solution in carbon tetrachloride with bromine or iodine, or by solubility tests, is avoided. Suitable acids are hydrochloric and sulphuric. The sodium salts of alkylated naphthalene sulphonic acids, saponines, alcohol sulphonates and condensation products of polyethylene polyamines with higher fatty acids, are mentioned as protective colloids. The rubber dispersion may be subjected to a preliminary oxidation, as by hydrogen peroxide. The product is filtered off, washed and dried; it may be vulcanized to produce leather- or linoleum-like products, or used for the production of moulded articles, or as a cork substitute. Amines or phenols may be added to prevent spontaneous ignition, phenol acting also as a softener. Substances having tanning properties are obtained by acting on the products with nitric acid.
