Abstract
In a two-stage process for making a silicone resin from a low molecular weight siloxane resin, the first stage comprises heating a low molecular weight siloxane of the average general formula RnSiO 4-n/2 , in which R is a monovalent saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon radical and n has an average value of 0,9 to 1,7, at a temperature within the range of 150 DEG to 325 DEG C. in the presence of 0,001 to 1,0% by weight, based on the weight of the siloxane resin, of a metal of Group Ia, VIa, VIIb or VIII of the Mendel<\>aeeff Periodic System, the metal being present as a metal salt or an organometal salt of a monocarboxylic acid, to produce a high molecular weight siloxane resin, and the second stage comprises curing the resin so produced. The metal salt may be added either before or during the oxidative condensation reaction. If desired the stage one resins may be freed of metals by washing with metal-fixing complex formers so that the ultimate resins may be metal-free, but metal salts may be added to the stage one resins to aid in developing the desired stage two resins. Salts specified are Fe and Cr stearates, Co ethylhexoate, Fe octoate, Cu acetate, Ni propionate and the naphthenates and octoates of Mo, W, Mn, Ni, Pd, Pt, Ag and Au. In a typical example (1) the resin obtained by hydrolysing a mixture of CH3.SiCl3 and (CH3)SiCl2 in aqueous methanol was divided into 5 parts; A served as a control; B contained 0,1% of Fe added as Fe octoate; C contained 0,1% of Cu added as Cu acetate; D contained 0,1% of Co added as Co ethyl hexoate; and E contained 0,1% of Cr added as Cr stearate. All five were heated at 250 DEG C. for 3 hours, polymerization occurring through condensation of residual -OH and -OCH3 groups but mainly through oxidation of -CH3 groups. Each resin was then dissolved in butyl acetate and the resulting solutions were applied to steel panels, air dried and aged by heating at 250 DEG C.; coating A crazed after 72 hours at 250 DEG C., whereas the others crazed after much longer periods at 250 DEG C.
