Abstract
1,041,450. Ion pumps and ionization manometers. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Aug. 4, 1964 [July 29, 1963], No. 31016/64. Heading HID. The pumping speed or sensitivity of a magnetically confined glow discharge device such as a vacuum pump or gauge having a cellular anode 26 with compartments of diameter or minimum internal dimension d located between cathode plates 32 and traversed by a magnetic field of intensity B is maintained at pressures below 10<SP>-7</SP> torr by arranging that the product Bd is greater than 1 kilogauss-inch, and B lies within the range 0À5 to 3À0 kilogauss. Preferably d lies in the range 1¢ to 2¢ inches. The length h of the compartments is from 1 to 1À5 times d. The device described is otherwise as described in Specification 873,024.
