Abstract

1,040,511. Inking apparatus; multi-colour printing. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Jan. 7, 1965 [Jan. 16, 1964], No. 671/65. Heading B6C. Inking apparatus.-Apparatus for inking the image on a plate on a cylinder 16 for multicolour printing comprises a plurality of ink trains A-C having forme rollers contacting the plate, the forme rollers 22, 24 associated with the first train A being constructed or adapted to contact the plate across the whole width thereof and the forme rollers 48, 50, 52, 54 associated with the other ink trains being constructed or adapted to contact the plate along only selected portions of the width thereof, the ordering of the trains being such that the layers applied by the trains B, C overlie only a part of the layer applied by the preceding train. The exposed ink layer only is transferred from the cylinder 16 to a web 73 by an offset roller 18. Each train includes, in addition to the forme rollers, three metal vibrating rollers 26, 28, 30, four rubber composition intermediate rollers 32, 34, 36, 38, a drum 40 which may be vibrated axially, a ductor roller 42, a fountain roller 44, and a fountain 46 containing a differently coloured ink. Advantageously the forme rollers of the trains B, C are of reduced diameter along selected portions of their length. Damping apparatus. The plate may be damped by a train comprising forme rollers 56, 58, a metallic axially vibrated roller 60, a ductor roller 62 and a fountain roller 64, or alternatively by a train, shown in dotted lines, which applies the water via the forme inking roller 22. Each inking train may have a separate associated damping train.
