Abstract

1, 40, 084. Molecule separator arranged in flow from gas chromatograph. LKB-PRODUKTER A.B. Feb. 9, 1965 [Feb. 19; 1964], No. 5616/65. Heading B1L. A molecule separator is arranged between a gas chromatography column and a mass spectrometer, which by removing the lighter molecules, mainly carrier gas molecules, increases the concentration of the sample substance in the gas entering the ion source in the spectrometer, and it also reduces the pressure of the gas to the pressure of operation in the spectrometer. Gas is fed from the chromatography column through conduit 52 to jet nozzle 4 and into a chamber 2 connected by conduit 14 to vacuum. The lighter molecules are deflected by a conical wall portion 9 and sucked out through conduit 14, the heavier molecules passing through a coaxial aperture 12 into a further chamber 6 under vacuum where the same procedure is repeated. The concentrated gas leaves the separator through a further coaxial aperture 12 and conduit 56 leading to the spectrometer. A pressure reducing valve 60 (Fig. 1, not shown) is arranged between the column and the separator.
