Abstract

1,039,723. Latches. R. C. FISHER. July 2, 1963 [July 3, 1962], No. 26137/63. Heading E2A. A safety belt buckle 10 comprises a base member 12 of channel section and having a latch plate retainer 50, and also a web portion 40 with upstanding flanges 42, 44 on opposite sides with inturned edge portions 46, 48, a latch plate 14 with a latch face 90 thereon, a belt tongue 30 having a latch surface 92 thereon, resilient means 16 normally biasing the latch plate towards the tongue and a release handle 18 pivotally supported by the base member 12 and operable to effect release of the belt tongue 30 from the base member. As shown, the latch plate 14 is positioned in the base member by the engagement of ears 60, 62, struck from the base member, with cut outs 64, 66 in the latch plate, whilst further ears 70, 72 in the base plate retain a rear slide 22 and position the handle 18 and the latch plate. A belt bar 20 is supported by a pair of ears, 120, on the slide 22, which extend inwardly from a downwardly depending rear portion 124 of the slide. The bar is retained in a pair of apertures 130, and is of generally pear-shaped cross-section with flattened end portions 134, 136 projecting into the apertures 130. The end portion of a belt 36 is looped over the bar 20 and extends downwardly through an aperture 80 in the base member 12 such that when the buckle is under load, an edge portion of the bar 20 overlies an edge portion 142 defining in part, the aperture 80. A rib 144 in the base member precludes slip of the belt when the buckle is subjected to severe loads. Adjustment of the belt is effected by moving the slide 22 inwardly and tilting and pulling the buckle relative to the belt for lengthening the belt, and pulling on the end portion of the belt which rotates the bar 20 so that the end portions 134, 136 thereof engage the upper edges of the apertures 130, for shortening the belt.
