Abstract

1,085,908. Latches; buckles. R. C. FISHER. Sept. 1, 1964 [Dec. 9, 1963], No. 35760/64. Heading E2A. A safety belt buckle 10 comprises a base member 12, a latch plate 14 pivotally supported by the base member, a belt tongue 30 which may be latched to the latch plate, resilient means 16 having a first portion 64 acting upon and biassing the latch plate into latching engagement with the tongue, and a pivoted release device 18 engageable with the latch plate to rotate the latter towards its un- .latched position against the first portion of the resilient means, the resilient means having a second portion 72, 74 acting upon the release device to bias the device towards the position in which the latch plate is latched to the tongue. As shown, the latch plate 14 is pivotably mounted within a folded end 50 of the base, the resilient means 16 is attached to the pivotal end of the latch plate and the release device 18 is pivoted in top flanges of the base. The buckle includes a belt bar 20 and a rear slide 22 therefor. One end of a belt portion 36 is adapted to be adjustably looped around the bar 20 and an end of a belt portion 38 is secured to the tongue 30 which is insertable into the base to be releasably retained by the latch plate 14 engaging a surface 58 of an aperture in the tongue 30. Upward pivotal movement of the release device 18 depresses the latch plate 14 against the second portion 72, 74 of the resilient means 16, a portion 76 of the resilient means then engaging the underside of the tongue 30 to assist release of the surface 58 from the face 54. The slide 22 which carries the bar 20 engages behind a flange 70 of the resilient means 16 which itself is engaged behind projections on the top flanges of the base 12.
