Abstract

1,180,273. Buckles. IRVING AIR CHUTE OF GREAT BRITAIN Ltd. 17 Feb., 1967 [21 Feb., 1966], No. 7799/67. Heading E2A. In a two part buckle for interconnecting two portions 12, 13 of a safety belt, the first part consists of a tongue plate 10 for connection to a first portion 12 of the safety belt, and the second part includes a casing C including a base wall 16 with upstanding side walls 17, 18; means 20 for connection to a second portion 13 of the safety belt; a latching member D rockably mounted in said casing, said latching member having an abutment adapted to engage with engaging means 25 on the tongue plate when the tongue plate has been inserted into the casing between the base wall and latching member; a resilient means 45 normally biasing the abutment of the latching member towards the base wall; and an actuating member E movably mounted on said casing; the casing further including a cover 79 having an opening 85 exposing a portion 61 of the actuating member for depression, the actuating member having means 71 engaging the latching member such that, in use, manual depression of said portion of the actuating member through the opening in the cover pivots the latching member out of engagement with the tongue plate. In the construction shown the means of the tongue plate engaged by the abutment is an edge of an opening and the abutment is the end of a downwardly inclined ramp 31a of the latching member. The means 20 for engaging the strap end portion 13 is a bar slidable in slots in the side walls of the casing portion, the strap end portion passing through a transverse opening 19 in the base wall 16 and being trapped between the bar and an edge of the opening. The casing cover has a downwardly sloping portion 83a to guide the tongue plate into position and to engage inderneath projections 93 of the side walls 17 and 18 to hold that end portion of the cover in place, the other end portion of the cover being held in place by projections 90 of the cover which fit into openings 91 of the side walls 17 and 18.
