Abstract

1,274,399. Buckles. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP. 26 Oct., 1970 [21 Nov., 1969], No. 50824/70. Heading E2A. A buckle assembly for a seat belt comprises a housing 22 for attachment to a seat belt and having an opening 24 therein, a cavity 26 extending into the housing from the opening to a wall 28 opposite the opening and a slot 52 extending into the cavity from the exterior of the housing for receipt of a tongue 36. There are latching means for engagement with the tongue in a latched position and operable for releasing the tongue in a release position, the latching means including a plurality of components all inserted through the opening and into the cavity in a predetermined order with the first engaging the wall, the components being disposed in the cavity with at least portions thereof positioned in serial overlapping relationship in the direction in which the cavity extends into the housing and means for retaining the latching means in the cavity. As shown, a push button 48 includes pegs 66 which are a press fit in holes 64 in the shoulders 62 of a latch bar 46, the latter being guided by surfaces 56 and having inclined ramps 60 extending upwardly from a channel 58; the head 40 of the tongue 36 is inserted into the slot 52 to engage the the ramps 60 to move the latch bar downwardly against the bias of a spring member 44 and until the head 40 of the tongue moves past the ramps when the latch bar moves upwardly to retain the tongue in a latched position. Depression of the push button 48 allows removal of the tongue. In modifications, (a) the latch bar-biassing member 44 is U-shaped and the push button 48 is hinged to an apertured cover 50, and (b) the push button is disposed adjacent the wall 28 and the surfaces 56 are constituted by metal channel-shaped guides.
