A fastening for vehicle safety belts comprises a tongue 11 for insertion into a socket 12 which is provided with latching members 38 for retaining the tongue, the latching members each consisting of a two-armed lever, being mounted on opposite sides of the socket and having one of their arms extending from the respective pivots in the general direction away from the socket mouth and including portions 49 for engagement respectively in recesses 15 in the corresponding edges of the tongue, and having their other arms extending from the respective pivots in the general direction towards the socket mouth and being provided with gripping surfaces 56 adapted to be squeezed together to effect disengagement of the lever portions from the tongue against the action of resilient means 48 biassing the latching members to rock about their pivots in directions to close their one arms together. As shown, the latching members 38 are pivoted about rivets 37 which also retain within the socket 12 a guide member 31 between top and bottom parts 32, 33 of which the latch members operate. A cover plate 28 is engaged over a lug 43 on the guide member 31 and is snap-engaged at its other end over end parts 63 of the socket. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), end portions 23 on the socket are dispensed with.
