Abstract

1,039,576. Travelling-wave tubes. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. Oct. 3, 1963 [Oct. 4, 1962], No. 38914/63. Heading H1D. A permanent magnetsystem for producing a substantially homogeneous magnetic field along the longitudinal axis of the system includes a plurality of magnet elements 2 which are permanently magnetized radially in relation to the axis, and which have a radial dimension which increases continuously or in a plurality of steps in both directions as their distance along the axis from the centre of the system increases and which are magnetized in opposite senses on opposite sides of the centre. Elements 2 are rings contained in a soft iron tube 1. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), radially disposed bar magnets are used instead of rings, the bar magnets being disposed in star fashion round the system axis, their outer poles contacting soft iron bridges 9. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the two magnets at the ends of the system are supplemented by extra radially magnetized magnets which cover the energy requirements of the leakage flux. The elements may be stepped on the outside of the system.
