Abstract

1,039,204. Fuel assemblies. NUCLEAR POWER PLANT CO. Ltd., and A.E.I. JOHN THOMPSON NUCLEAR ENERGY CO. Ltd., [trading as NUCLEAR POWER GROUP]. Jan. 28, 1965 [March 11, 1964], No. 10208/64. Heading G6C. At least two fuel assemblies, of the type comprising a cluster of canned fuel elements 2 supported in a tube 4, e.g. of graphite, are coupled together by rod lengths 5 so as to permit limited relative axial and angular movement between the assemblies; each rod length is associated with a collar 7a which transmits a lifting force from the the rod length to the tube when the axial clearance therebetween has been taken up. The radial clearance between the rod length 5a and the associated bore in sleeve 6, and the end face of the sleeve 6 allows the two fuel assemblies to incline relatively to each other. In a second embodiment, the projection 5a<1> is replaced by a short transverse key to permit uncoupling, and in a third embodiment the key extends radially to terminate flush with the outer wall of the graphite tube 4.
