925,018. Hydraulic couplings and converters. AMERICAN RADIATOR & STANDARD SANITARY CORPORATION. Nov. 18, 1959 [Nov. 26, 1958], No. 39140/59. Class 69 (2). A torque-transmitting device such as an hydraulic coupling comprises a torque-transmitting shell 26 carrying vanes 90, at least some of which are interconnected by tie means 98 at points remote from their connection to the shell, the tie means being yieldably-connected to the vanes whereby circumferential loads on a vane are partially absorbed by the vane and partially absorbed by the tie means and adjacent vanes. One or more tie means may be provided on the pump and/or turbine of the device and each consists of a ring, which may be formed in several segments, having slots 104 in which the vanes fit with a small clearance of, for example, 0.002 inch. The tie means is secured to the shell 26 by bolts 106 having a reduced central portion 110 which permits resilient movement between the tie means and shell. In another embodiment, the tie means is secured to the vanes by having a portion which can be bent to lock the tie means to a ring fitted into notches in the vanes. In a further embodiment, the vanes are provided with tags which engage slots in the tie means and can be bent to secure the tie means to the vanes. In a still further embodiment, the tie means has an annular projection engaging notches in the vanes and is secured thereto by an annulus which is secured to the tie means by screws.
