Abstract
965,961. Fuel elements. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. March 27, 1961 [March 28, 1960], No. 10879/60. Heading G6C. A fuel assembly consists of sleeves 7 which contain clusters of fuel rods 14, have spigots 12 which fit sockets 11 on adjacent sleeves, and are locked together by parts of grids 18 which locate the fuel rods. Each grid has radial arms and concentric rings. Some of the arms are inserted through slots 9 into holes 8 in the sleeves and are locked in by collars 33, their ends being split and bent over as shown at 60 (Fig. 6); the other arms bear on the inner walls of the sleeves. Each arm and ring is made from two stainless steel strips of plano-convex cross section joined on their plane sides; the strips are indented to form sockets 17 for the ends of the fuel rods and are notched where arms and rings cross. An auxiliary grid 20 spaces the rods during assembly; space is left between the grids and in sockets 17 for fuel expansion. The assembly also includes a neutron scattering plug and is fastened to a steel tube by which it can be lifted from a reactor; it can be lifted in tension by a tie rod passing through ferrule 21 in the grid 18.
