Abstract

1,039,077. Opening containers. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. April 2, 1965 [Sept. 23, 1964], No. 14123/65. Heading B8D. A sheet 31 of material permeable to gas but not permeable to the liquid or other contents of a container is secured to the underside of the end closure of the container, in order to prevent the contents escaping when a tear strip 22, Fig. 2 (not shown), in the end closure is first opened. The sheet 31 may be secured by a spot coating of adhesive, or by an overall coating; if it is secured along the line of the tear strip 22, it is of sufficient strength to resist tearing, or the adhesive is sufficiently weak to prevent the sheet 31 from being torn. The sheet may be of gauze-like fabric or of paper; and it may be in the form of a coupon carrying indicia. The tear strip 22, Fig. 1 (not shown), is defined by score lines 17, 20 and has a strengthening rib 27. An integral rivet formed in the strip at 25 secures a pull tab 26. The can end has a circumferential shock-absorbing bead 15 and central reinforcing panel 28. The tear strip may be used to provide a pouring opening only.
