Vacuum or low-pressure apparatus, arrangements of.-Alternating current is obtained from a direct-current source 13 by means of an electron discharge device 1, a capacity 3, and an inductance 2. The anode 9 of the device 1 is maintained at a constant potential by means of a battery 4; while the potential of the third electrode 11 is varied between such limits that the device 1 operates as a negative resistance. The frequency of the alternating current is varied by varying the capacity 3 and inductance 2; and in order that the system may oscillate, the product of the negative resistance and the resistance of the inductance 2 should be less than the ratio of the inductance 2 to the capacity 3.
