Abstract

23,024. Majorana, Q. Oct. 9. Vacuum tubes.-A stream of negative electrons radiated from a cathode, a hot filament 2, or radium passes between two conductors, such as metallic combs 3, 4, which normally do not affect the stream. When the conductors 3, 4 are connected by terminals 8, 9 to a source of variable or other electric pressure, the discharge is deflected, and an indication is given in a galvanometer 14, telephone receiver 13, or other device in the circuit of a battery 12 and anode 5. The apparatus may be used as a receiver for wireless telegraphy or telephony, or as a telephonic relay. The filament 2 is heated by current from a battery 11, and may be of any form. The anode 5 may be folded around the filament 2, or around the conductors 3, 4.
