Abstract
144,803. British Thomson - Houston Co., (General Electric Co.). March 17, 1919. Vacuum tubes.-In a system of wireless telephony an electron discharge device is employed having two filaments 23, 24 and two grids 25, but no third or plate electrodes. The microphone currents operate through the transformer 26 to put variable potential on the grids 25, the secondary being divided and so connected that the two grids become positive and negative at the same time. The filaments are connected by leads 27, 28 to an oscillation transformer or resonant circuit which couples the electron device to an aerial in which oscillations are produced from some independent source. An oscillating potential of high value is thus maintained between the two filaments, and while the grids are at positive potential, current flows alternately at the oscillation frequency from filament 23 to filament 24 and conversely, thus diverting energy from the aerial in accordance with the variations of the speaking current during each half cycle.
