Abstract
1,038,624. Door holders. DUNFORD FIRE PROTECTION SERVICES Ltd. June 26, 1963 [March 26, 1962], No. 11423/62. Heading E2A. An electrically controlled door holder for holding a door open is designed to be mounted adjacent to a door 16 and to receive within it a keeper 15 attached to the door, the door holder comprising a box within which is pivotally mounted a fastening member 9 movable between two positions to free or engage said keeper, resilient means 11 biasing the fastening member into one of said two positions and an electromagnetic solenoid 6 the armature of which is connected to the fastening member, the solenoid being operative when energized to displace the fastening member to the other of said two positions against the bias of the resilient means. In the construction shown the resilient means is a coiled compression spring 11 which normally holds the fastening member away from the keeper and energization of the solenoid coil is necessary to move the fastening member to the keeper engaging position and to compress the spring. A switch 19 is provided to enable the solenoid circuit to be broken to allow the fastening member to release the door. A plurality of such door holders can be used in large buildings such as hospitals, stores or office blocks to hold doors open, the solenoids being connected to a common controlling device e.g. an electrical fire alarm, a heat or smoke detector or a push button master switch so that all the solenoids can be released simultaneously to release the doors to allow them to close under the urge of automatic closers fitted to the doors. With this arrangement failure of the electric circuit also causes the doors to open. In a modification the solenoid and spring can be arranged so that the spring normally holds the fastening member in its keeper-engaging position the solenoid being energized to release the fastening member. In this modification, as an alternative to the switch 19, an actuator such as a rotary cam or a push rod can be provided for engaging the fastening member to displace it against the bias of the spring 11, the actuator having a portion projecting from the box for hand or pedal operation.
