1,038,565. Forced flow steam boilers; hotwater boilers, heat exchange tubes and tube supports. VAPOR CORPORATION. Aug. 16, 1963 [June 5, 1963], No. 32441/63. Headings F4A and F4S. A forced circulation steam boiler or a water or oil heater comprises a number of annularly shaped tube coils each of which has a plurality of rows and layers and which are connected in parallel between an inlet and an outlet manifold, hot gases from a burner passing over the coils to heat fluid flowing therethrough. In the forced recirculation steam boiler shown four annularly-shaped coils 14 ... 17 of rectangular cross-section are located side by side in a cylindrical heat exchanger section 10, the coil turns being staggered in each row and in each layer as shown in Fig. 5 so that they nest together. The coil inlets 14a ... 17a and outlets 14b ... 17b are respectively connected to manifolds 18, 19, the outlet manifolds being connected to a steam and water separating drum 12 having a feedwater inlet 27 and steam outlet 24 whilst the inlet manifold is connected to the outlet of a circulating pump 23 drawing water from the drum. The boiler is heated by gases from a combustion chamber 33 fired by a gas or oil burner 35, the gases issuing into the centre space of the coils through a throat 37 and flowing outwardly between the coil turns in countercurrent to the working fluid flow to enter a peripheral flue gas chamber 28 which communicates with a stack 29. The coil layers are separated by sinuous spacers 41 ... 46, Fig. 5 (not shown), the inner spacers 41, 42 being of thicker material, whilst the turns in each layer are held at the correct spacing by welded blocks 40. The capacity of the generator can be varied by fitting more or less coils and adjusting the size of the coil housing and combustion chamber.
